UK Theory Test Guide: Cost, Booking, Hazard Perception and Pass Tips
Before you can sit your practical driving test, you need to pass the driving theory test. It is a straightforward exam when you prepare properly — but too many learners underestimate it and end up having to retake. This guide covers everything you need to know, from booking to hazard perception tips and revision advice.
At Wiz Driving School, our support does not stop at practical lessons. We believe theory knowledge and practical skills go hand in hand — and we help our learners with both.
What Is the UK Driving Theory Test?
The theory test has two parts, taken in the same sitting:
Multiple choice — a series of questions covering the Highway Code, road signs, rules, and safe driving principles. You need to answer correctly to pass.
Hazard perception — a set of video clips showing real driving scenarios. You click each time you spot a developing hazard. This part tests how well you read the road ahead — exactly the skill your Wiz instructor builds with you during every practical lesson.
You must pass both parts in the same sitting. If you fail either one, you will need to retake the full test and pay again — which is why preparation matters from the start.
How to Book Your Theory Test
When you are ready to take your theory test, Wiz makes the process simple. Visit the official gov.uk website and book your theory test at one of the test centres nearest to you. Learners in Sale, Chadderton, and Bredbury all have convenient test centres nearby — your Wiz instructor can advise which one is most practical for your location.
Always book directly through gov.uk. Third-party websites charge more for exactly the same booking and add nothing of value.
How to Revise for the Theory Test
Wiz Driving School provides learning resources to help every learner prepare with confidence. Here is what we recommend:
Free mock test practice — Take a free mock test of multiple-choice questions on the official gov.uk website, along with a practice hazard perception test. This is the best way to get familiar with the format before your real test day. You can find the link on our theory resources page.
Theory Test Pro — This is an online simulation of the full UK driving theory test that allows you to try official-style test questions in a realistic environment. Wiz signposts all learners to this resource as part of our complete learning package. Visit our resources page for the link.
Study the Highway Code — Road signs, stopping distances, speed limits, road markings, and right of way are all commonly tested. Study these consistently rather than trying to memorise everything at once.
Use your lessons — Every Wiz lesson builds your real-world hazard awareness, which directly supports your hazard perception score. The planning and anticipation skills you develop on the road are exactly what the hazard perception test measures.
Hazard Perception Tips
The hazard perception section is where many learners lose unnecessary marks. Here is what to focus on:
Spot hazards early. You score more points for identifying a hazard as it begins to develop rather than waiting until it is obvious. Train yourself to read the road ahead — parked vehicles, pedestrians near junctions, cyclists, and slow-moving traffic are all signs that a hazard may be developing.
Do not click randomly. Clicking repeatedly to try to boost your score will get you disqualified from that clip entirely. Click deliberately when you genuinely see a hazard developing.
Practise regularly. Use the free hazard perception practice clips on gov.uk and Theory Test Pro — both linked from the Wiz resources page — until spotting hazards becomes second nature.
